Congratulations to Amy Shannon on receiving the 2016 Ahrens Playground Advocate of the Year Award. Amy is an Early Childhood Educational Advisor with the Family Resource Center Child Care Project in Carroll, Iowa.
The Ahrens Playground Safety Advocate of the Year is given to an individual who has made many contributions to playground safety. Amy has been actively promoting and advocating for quality and SAFE™ outdoor spaces in early childhood since the beginning of her career. She participated in NPPS’s Safety School at the University of Northern Iowa in 2010. Since that time, she has been using NPPS’s SAFE™ model to help provide best practices in the outdoors. She has regularly worked with preschool and child care centers on developing, maintaining, and financially support quality outdoor programs and environments. Not only is she supporting center programs, she has developed a line of communication and support for home child care providers in her area when they request information.
NPPS is extremely proud in Amy’s advocacy as she has lead the efforts in obtaining funds and facilitated three trainings to promote SAFE outdoor plays areas in 2011, 2013, and 2015. She has currently teamed up with a local Lions Club and leading a major renovation project in a community outdoor playground. The information she has obtained from NPPS has helped her be successful. She used the SAFE™ Report Card, took pictures, and shared information with the Lions Club and many community members. Amy reported “It has been exciting to work with the community on this project from the beginning.”
Congratulations to Amy Shannon for receiving the Ahrens Playground Safety Advocate of the Year and making a difference in your community for quality and SAFE™ playgrounds.
